The Natural Pet Store

I went to visit my mother over the weekend to pick up my two girls and during the visit she brought to my attention a pretty cool store for pets. It is an all natural pet store with an online presence. This would’nt typically be a topic of interest for me, but there is background to this story.

About 3 months ago, my wife and girls surprised me by bringing home a “Shi-Poo”(forgive me if I spelled this wrong). This is a small, albeit cute, furry little rascal. It was even a bigger surprise to me  because the day before Max arrived, we as a family determined that we were not going to get a pet because of my allergies to most animals, and especially dogs. We determined this after I walked out  of a local pet store with puffy, red, watery eyes and a runny nose while visiting with dogs. As a child, I was nick named ” The Boy in the Plastic Bubble” because of the frequency of being hospitalized and put under a plastic tent for oxygen because of my accute asthma attacks brought on by allergies and the like.

Moving on……Well, commented my wife ” the Shi-Poo is hypoallergenic”! Don’t believe the hype people, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. There are dogs that people with allergies are less sensitive to, nonetheless in many cases the allergic response is still there and was for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not a dog hater by any means and in fact I am a lover of all animals from a far:-) Unfortunately for little Max, he got caught in the middle of a battle that had less to do with him and more to do with the frustration about my families lack of sensitivity to my sniffles. To that end, in the past 3 months Max and I have come to know and understand one another as well as appreciate one another. We are pretty good friends now, but we still have boundaries (Max cannot come up stairs). My allergies have been mild and manageable but more importantly the wife and kids are giddy about having little Max around. Max appears equally happy to have a family that loves and cares for him.

Recently, we notice that Max is sensitive to the food we have been feeding him. He either doesnt like it, or coughs it up like a cat with a hairball! I was intrigued with the idea of bringing home the natural pet store guide to Jessica (my wife) so that she could find alternative food options for Max. The natural food store has just about everything you could imagine for pets:

  • Natural Flea & Tick Control ( My mother swears it is the best thing since Roller Disco)
  • Huge Selection of Natural Food
  • Natural Pet Vitamins
  • Holistic Remedies for Pets
  • and more…

The web address is www.onlynaturalpet.com. I am not affiliated in any way to this company, just a big believer in  holistic foods and medicines as well as living with a sense of consideration for the environment.

Eco Sensitive Cleaning Products- Part 2

I must admit, I havent been the greatest consumer of eco-sensitive cleaning products in the past and in fact I am afraid I have been one of the worst consumers, a selfish one. But like everything else, the more I learn and the more I grow as a person, the more I look outward rather than inward and take into consideration more important topics, such as that of the environment.

One of the aspects of taking a greener approach to living is to identify things in our homes that would be considered environmentally toxic and in many cases toxic to our health. Unfortunately for the vast majority of us, we are not educated enough to make the correct choices on products to purchase.  To that end, I am posting a list of house keeping ingredients to avoid in your home because they are considered toxic and recommending a list of replacement housekeeping ingredients.

  1. NPE's: Nonylphenol ethoxylates are found in detergents, stain removers, citrus cleaners and disinfectants. NPE's break down into toxic substances and can act as a hormone disrupter.
  2. Antibacterials: Antibacterials can cause skin and eye irritation and possibly be a contributing factor to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
  3. Ammonia: Ammonia based cleaners are poisonous when swallowed and irritating to repiratory passages if accidentally inhaled. Never mix ammonia with bleach because it produces a poisonous gas.
  4. Butyl cellosolve( or butyl glycol, ethylene glycol, monobutyl) are found in glass cleaners and can irritate lung tissue. It is aslo poisonous if swallowed.
  5. Chlorine bleach: Chlorine bleach is irritating to the lungs and eyes. Again, do not mix with ammonia!
  6. D-limonene: D-limonene is found in air freshners and is a skin irritant.
  7. Disinfectants: Disinfectants are regulated by the EPA as pesticides. They cant be good for you! They also cause problems in water ways by killing good bacteria.
  8. Hydrochloric and sulfuric acid ( toilet cleaners): Burns skin; irritates eyes, and can cause respiratory tract irritation.
  9. Naptha (furniture/floor polish): Can cause headaches, nausea, and central nervous system problems if overexposed.
  10. Phosphates (Dishwasher and laundry detergents): Kill aquatic life by contributing to the overgrowth of algae and aquatic weeds.
  11. Sodium Hydroxide or lye (Oven, drain, metal cleaners): Irritating to eyes, nose, throat and burns on contact.

To contrast the hazardous cleaning chemicals mentioned above, there are supplies you can find in your local market that are much better for the environment and the overall health of you and your loved ones.

  • Castile Soap: Castile soap can be used for cleaning your body, pets, degreasing, and washing clothes.
  • White Distilled Vinegar: Kills most mold, bacteria, and germs due to it's acidity. Use around the house for all purpose cleaning.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide: Antibacterial and anti-viral cleaner used to clean floors, toilets, showers, and just about anything else around the house. Try to find 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide to limit any stabilizing additives.
  • Cream of Tartar: Mix with hydrogen peroxide to clean aluminum pots and pans, or mix with lemon juice to clean copper: Clean porcelain stains or mix with glycerin to clean fabric stains. This is a great an nonabrasive cleaner.
  • Borax: Borax is considered safer for the environment (in small dosages) than many man made chemicals because it is natural; however it is considered dangerous to people and should be kept away from children, pets, and food. That being said, it is great disinfectant when mixed with vinegar and water. It's also used as a laundry cleaner (booster). It can be used as a drain cleaner ( to unclog), toilet cleaner, garbage can sanitizer, and to clean carpets.

Eco Sensitive Cleaning Products- Part 1

Do you ever thing about the chemicals you are using in your home to clean around the house? Are you considering the health of your family and the health of our environment? There are many environmental responsible products and services in your grocery store, on the internet, and also in specialty stores. I even purchased bar soap made of natural products at our local farmers market in Corona, Ca.

If you want to make certain that you are making good product choices or should I say making enviornmentally sensitive choices, you will want to look out for products that include the “Green Seal” label:www.greenseal.org. Environmentally sensitive products with this label have been thouroughly tested using “science-based procedures” to ensure their effectiveness against others in the same class.

In additional look for the Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative symbol: www.epa.gov/dfe a recognition for “those who commit to use of safer surfactants” which basically means the material breaks down quickly  and as a result helps to protect aqautic life.

Look for Part 2 for specific cleaner product ingredients to shy away from.

Summer Cleaning (E-Waste)

For years I dumped my cell phones, batteries, the old ET looking computer monitors, broken televisions, etc. in the large trash can right outside my home. I was not familiar with the concept of “e-waste” and what it does to our enviornment.  E-waste or waste left over from electronics contains contaminants called PCB’s (Polychlorinated Biphenyls), lead, mercury, and cadmium. These substances are toxic to our enviornment.

Unfortunately, if these substances are not disposed of properly they end up in our soil (where food is grown) and also in our water supply. There is also the issue of burning trash ,and as a result,  toxic fumes are released in to our air supply. There are effects to the ozone layer as well as health problems because of inhalation.

Some of the specific health effects from e-waste are:

  • Mercury Exposure: Gum Problems, Mood and Mental changes ( mood swings, irritability, hallucinations), Nervous System Malfunctions ( tremor in tongue, eyelids, hands), Reproductive Issues, Kidney Disorders, and even death.
  • Lead Poisining: Nervous System, Growth and Development, Cognitive Development, Behavior, Hearing, Sight, Movement and muscular, Digestive system, Renal (kidneys), and even death.
  • Cadmium: Respiratory tract and kidney problems ( could be fatal).
  • PCB’s: Cancer

With all of this in mind, please be aware that there are alternatives to disposing of batteries, computers, televisions, cell phones and other e-waste. Please search for the local e-waste recycling center in your area. You might even find that your local waste management company will handle this for you. In Corona, Ca Waste Management,Inc. , which is the company that handles our trash pick-up, has a toll-free line to call for e-waste pick up. Our environment and our health are depending on each of us to make a responsible effort to recycle.

Thinking About Making a Change for the Green?

Natural resources are in high demand but there are only so much in the way of supply. This is called scarcity in economics.

Building with sustainable resources can make a tremendous impact on our society given buildings consume " 14% of potable water, 40% of raw materials, and 39% of energy in the United States alone" (according to the US Green Building Council). What that means to me an you is about 15 trillion gallons of water and 3 billion tons of raw materials annually. We need to take a stronger look at ourselves as a society from big business down to individual households.

Why would you want to go Green?

Environment

The world has a complex eco-system that is intertwined and we are all part of the problem, or should I say the solution. We can make it a better place to live by simply reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and improving the air and water quality.

Savings

You can save a lot of money on annual energy costs if you make wise choices, such as using energy star rated appliances, CFL light bulbs ( look for brands with low mercury content), landscaping with native plants, using trees for shading, and low flow toilets. These are all relatively low in cost and can be done progressively in steps based on your circumstances.

In addition, you can bring additional money to your home by recycling with the local recycling center. I have a good friend that makes it a point to pick up left behind plastic water bottles after we play in our city basketball league to give to his children. They go to the recycling center together and it turns into a fun educational trip and the kids returning with $20-$40 every couple of weeks. What a great way to show the value of recycling!

Health

Health is also a driving a factor of goiing green. For many of us the air inside is worse than the air outside.Green building can improve air quality and water quality in the home and as a result improve your overall health. Using sustainable resources that reduce environmental toxins is the best approach to doing this.

More to come......

Need a Plan to Purchase Real Estate

Purchase Plan:

Find the right representantitive; even if you’re not quite ready to buy, your buyer’s agent can be an absolute wealth of information, and can often offer ‘scoops’ on local developments you might not have know about otherwise.  Speak to your agent first and he or she can be helping to guide you right from the start.

Determine your price range.Online mortgage calculators are a good place to start, but as you get closer to being ready to buy, there is no substitute for a written mortgage pre-approval.  Just speaking to your lender is an extremely worthwhile venture – this is the only way to really get an in-depth picture of your overall financial picture and to discover exactly what you can reasonably afford to spend on a home (and possibly on renovating).

Investigate your local market..The internet can be incredibly valuable in doing preparatory research.  Start with your agent – he or she can direct you to valuable resources and immediately start e-mailing you real estate listings that may interest you (or at least give you a better idea of what your needs and wants are).

Compose a needs/wants list that takes into consideration your local market conditions, your price range, and the advice of your real estate agent.

Purchase your home. Once you’re ready to act, you may be surprised by how quickly you can make a decision.  Armed with your pre-approval, a little market knowledge, and your needs/wants list, call your real estate agent, hit the pavement, and when you see ‘the house’, put in an offer.  With the right team behind you, it really can be that easy!
